ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 The United States Men’s National Team began its preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup on Saturday with a 4\u20131 victory over Peru at Inter&Co Stadium. The Fan Appreciation Match brought a sold-out crowd of 24,228 to Orlando as head coach Mauricio Pochettino introduced a new generation of American players alongside several established internationals.
The match marked the beginning of a new four-year cycle following the United States’ departure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Pochettino, who recently signed a contract extension through 2030, used the international friendly to evaluate emerging talent while maintaining experience throughout his starting lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Tyler Adams led the Americans alongside Gio Reyna, Yunus Musah and Malik Tillman. The starting lineup also featured three teenagers making their senior international debuts: 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, defender Peyton Miller and 19-year-old Orlando City forward Justin Ellis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Peru, the friendly provided an opportunity to continue developing its squad under head coach Mano Menezes. Veteran goalkeeper Pedro Gallese started between the posts, while captain Yoshimar Yot\u00fan and forward Gianluca Lapadula brought experience to the visiting side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The occasion held particular significance for Ellis, who made his senior international debut at the home stadium of his club, Orlando City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young forward wasted little time making an impact.
Less than four minutes into the match, Ellis drew a foul on the left side of the field, giving the United States a free kick in an attacking position. Reyna delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Ellis rose to direct a looping header toward the far post and into the net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal gave the Americans an early 1\u20130 advantage and marked the fastest goal by a player making his USMNT debut in the modern era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States continued to press forward, with Sullivan and Alex Freeman combining on the right side to create another early opportunity. Peru’s defense recovered to block Sullivan’s attempt from close range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the Americans’ strong opening, Peru responded in the 15th minute.
Yot\u00fan delivered a cross into the penalty area, finding Lapadula, who rose above the defense and headed the ball past goalkeeper Matt Freese to level the match at 1\u20131.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States nearly restored its advantage five minutes later when Miller advanced down the left side and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Tillman connected with a first-time shot, but Gallese produced a save to keep the visitors level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peru also threatened through Oliver Sonne, whose header was collected by Freese.
The Americans maintained much of the attacking pressure throughout the remainder of the first half, creating additional opportunities through Reyna, Sullivan and Ellis. However, neither side managed to break the deadlock before halftime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teams entered the break tied at 1\u20131.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pochettino made his first substitution at halftime, introducing goalkeeper Diego Kochen in place of Freese. The change gave Kochen his senior international debut.The United States continued to control possession after the restart, but the decisive shift came shortly after the hour mark when Pochettino introduced several substitutes, including Mathis Albert, Julian Hall, Zavier Gozo, Sebastian Berhalter and Antonee Robinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes immediately influenced the match.
Albert made an attacking run into Peru’s penalty area and was brought down by a defender, earning the Americans a penalty kick.
Tillman stepped forward and converted from the spot in the 66th minute, restoring the United States’ lead at 2\u20131.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six minutes later, Hall extended the advantage.
Following a recycled corner kick, Robinson returned the ball to Berhalter on the right side. Berhalter delivered a cross toward the far post, where Hall connected to score his first senior international goal and give the Americans a 3\u20131 lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Ellis, Hall marked his international debut with a goal, highlighting the contributions of the younger players throughout the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States continued to control the closing stages, limiting Peru’s opportunities while maintaining its attacking momentum.
In the 90th minute, Berhalter provided the final goal of the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving a pass from Hall outside the penalty area, the midfielder struck a powerful shot from approximately 25 yards, sending the ball beyond Gallese to complete the 4\u20131 victory.
Berhalter finished with a goal and an assist, while Hall recorded a goal and an assist in his senior international debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Americans finished with 70 percent possession and outshot Peru 16\u20135. Eleven players earned their first senior international caps, including eight teenagers, as Pochettino began integrating a new generation into the national team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Peru, Lapadula’s first-half equalizer briefly brought the visitors level, but the team struggled to contain the Americans following their second-half substitutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victory gave the United States a winning start to its new World Cup cycle, with contributions from established internationals and several players making their first appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Americans will continue their international schedule against Chile on September 29 at Energizer Park in St. Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
