Morgan State Ends Rivalry Drought With Five-Set Win at Coppin State

Coppin State vs UCLA Volleyball 10-16-26

BALTIMORE, Md. — Conference positioning and local pride framed Friday evening’s meeting between Coppin State and Morgan State, as the Baltimore rivals arrived at the Physical Education Complex Arena with different streaks to defend. Coppin entered unbeaten in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while Morgan sought to extend a three-match winning run and end a lengthy drought against the Eagles.

For Coppin, the matchup offered an opportunity to respond to Wednesday’s straight-sets loss to Towson, which had ended a program-record 14-match winning streak. The defending MEAC champion entered Friday at 15–6 overall and 6–0 in the conference, with its perfect league record still intact despite the non conference setback.

Morgan made the short trip across Baltimore at 5–13 overall and 4–2 in MEAC play. Consecutive victories over South Carolina State, Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore had given the Bears momentum heading into one of their toughest conference tests. Their recent results included five-set wins against South Carolina State and Delaware State, followed by a four-set road victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.

The rivalry added another challenge. Coppin had won the previous 14 meetings, leaving Morgan searching for its first victory over the Eagles since November 2019. Friday’s contest, designated Pink Night by the hosts, gave the Bears a chance to turn their improving conference form into a breakthrough against their crosstown opponent.

Morgan secured that breakthrough in five sets, defeating Coppin 3–2 to end the Eagles’ run in the series and hand them their first conference loss of the season. The result extended the Bears’ winning streak to four matches and gave them a road victory over the defending conference champion.

The victory moved Morgan to 6–13 overall and 5–2 in the MEAC, bringing the Bears within one conference win of Coppin at the halfway point of the league schedule. The Eagles fell to 15–7 and 6–1, with a home meeting against Norfolk State next on their schedule Sunday. The rivals are scheduled to meet again November 13 at Morgan’s Hill Field House.

Final Score: Coppin State 2–3 Morgan State
