Coppin State Keeps Its MEAC Momentum Against North Carolina Central

Coppin State vs NC Central 11-01-26

Coppin State opened November at home with its place atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to protect and an opponent that had already shown it could challenge the defending champion. North Carolina Central arrived in Baltimore’s Physical Education Complex Arena looking to turn a successful start to its weekend into another important conference result.

There was history behind the matchup. Central had handed Coppin its only conference loss last season and became the first MEAC opponent to take a set from Coppin this year during their October 4 meeting in Durham. Coppin won that encounter in four sets, but the return match offered Central another opportunity to test the conference leader.

Central also brought momentum after sweeping Morgan State on Friday. That victory extended its winning streak to two matches, setting up Sunday as a chance to complete a sweep of its Baltimore road trip.

Coppin quickly made that task more difficult, taking the opening set 25–13. Central’s strongest response came in the second, when it recovered from a 13–5 deficit to close within 22–20. The visitors remained within reach at 24–22, but Coppin secured the next point to take a two-set advantage. A 25–12 third set completed the home team’s sweep.

Ivanna Luna led Coppin’s attack with 10 kills and only one error on 19 attempts, finishing with a .474 hitting percentage. Cherisse Atilano and Deviana Walker contributed seven kills apiece, while Kendall Minta converted all five of her attacking attempts into kills.

Eva Rovello supplied 28 assists, six kills and seven digs. Coppin’s defensive work supported that offensive balance, with Coco Figueroa recording a match-high 11 digs and two service aces. Minta added four blocks, including two solo stops, while Kayden Cupid contributed three kills and three blocks in one set on her return to the lineup.

Coppin hit .341 while holding Central to .068. Talia Emmen led the visitors with six kills, and Shalyn Bell finished with five kills and nine digs. Breylan Fairley recorded 11 assists.

The result moved Coppin to 19–8 overall and 10–1 in conference play, marking its fifth consecutive season with at least 10 MEAC victories. Central slipped to 7–16 overall and 5–6 in the league.

Coppin next travels to Maryland Eastern Shore on November 5 for a 6 p.m. match, with an opportunity to reach 20 wins.

Final Score: Coppin State 3, North Carolina Central 0
Set Scores: 25–13, 25–22, 25–12
