Greek Night at Morgan State Brings Celebration and a Tough Conference Test

Morgan State Bears vs SC State 10-29-26

Greek Night brought a celebration of campus life to Hughes Stadium on Thursday as Morgan State welcomed South Carolina State for a nationally televised MEAC matchup. With the marching band adding its own performance to the evening, the occasion brought together football and the traditions surrounding it. On the field, the Bears were looking to turn that night into a fresh start in conference play.

Morgan entered the matchup five days removed from an overtime loss to Howard. The visit from the defending MEAC champions offered another opportunity to respond, and a second-quarter surge briefly put the Bears within reach. South Carolina State ultimately took control, however, scoring 37 unanswered points to finish with a 51–10 victory.

The Bulldogs struck first through a sustained opening drive. Josh Shaw completed an 11-play, 82-yard possession with a one-yard touchdown run, and South Carolina State later doubled its advantage when Keely Watson found Martavious Collins for a five-yard score. Morgan entered the second quarter trailing 14–0.

The Bears’ defense supplied the breakthrough. Just eight seconds into the quarter, Raquane Matthews returned a fumble 14 yards for a touchdown. Alex Amaya added the extra point, cutting the deficit to seven and giving Morgan an immediate route back into the contest.

The offense followed with its most productive scoring possession of the night. Morgan moved 62 yards across 13 plays, using nearly eight minutes before Amaya converted a 30-yard field goal. With 5:10 remaining in the half, the Bears had reduced South Carolina State’s lead to 14–10.

For that stretch, Morgan had made the game competitive again. The defensive score and long field-goal drive gave the Greek Night crowd a football response to accompany the evening’s celebrations. The challenge was carrying that recovery into the break.

South Carolina State prevented it. Watson connected with Troy Hillman for a 20-yard touchdown as the second quarter expired, completing a 59-yard drive and sending the Bulldogs into halftime ahead 21–10. The late touchdown changed the position Morgan faced entering the second half.

The visitors continued to build their advantage after the break. Jett Jackson converted a 35-yard field goal, and Watson added touchdown passes to DJ Maultsby and Shamontae Burgess. Ronnie Robinson and Kacy Fields supplied fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns as South Carolina State held Morgan scoreless over the final two quarters.

Watson completed 27 of 36 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. South Carolina State finished with 513 total yards, including 217 rushing yards, and generated 30 first downs.

Morgan was held to 150 total yards and minus-12 net rushing yards, with sacks contributing to that figure. Cameron Edge completed 17 of 28 passes for 144 yards, while Justin Perry led the Bears’ receivers with five catches for 72 yards.

The result moved South Carolina State to 7–2 overall and 2–0 in conference play. Morgan fell to 5–4 and 0–2 in the MEAC. Greek Night supplied the occasion for campus celebration, but the football outcome left the Bears searching for a more sustained response as their conference schedule continued.
