WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Spirit returned to Audi Field on Saturday afternoon with a playoff berth within reach and a familiar rival standing in the way. Coming out of the international break, Washington faced league-leading Gotham FC in a match carrying postseason significance for both clubs.
The Spirit entered the contest following a 3–2 road victory over the Houston Dash on October 4. Goals from Tara Rudd and Sofia Cantore, followed by Clara Luvanga’s 84th-minute winner, had moved Washington closer to securing its place in the playoffs with three regular-season matches remaining.

Gotham arrived with ambitions of its own. The visitors entered the weekend atop the standings with 55 points and a four-match unbeaten run. A victory over Washington would secure a top-two finish, while a win combined with a San Diego Wave defeat would deliver the first NWSL Shield in Gotham’s history.
Recent meetings added another layer to the occasion. Gotham had defeated Washington in the 2025 NWSL Championship and again at Citi Field in July, extending a run of five consecutive shutouts against the Spirit. For Washington, Saturday offered an opportunity to change that pattern while taking an important step toward another postseason run.

With 19,215 supporters in attendance, the Spirit created an early opening. Trinity Rodman found Luvanga in the third minute, but the forward sent her effort narrowly wide.
Washington continued looking for opportunities through its wide players, with Rodman testing Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. Shortly before halftime, Cantore delivered a ball into the penalty area that Rodman met with a header, forcing Berger into a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
The teams entered the break level at 0–0, leaving Washington still searching for the finish that had proved so elusive against Gotham.

Mélissa Bethi replaced Leicy Santos at halftime and went on to provide the decisive assist. In the 70th minute, Bethi sent the ball into the penalty area for Lucia Di Guglielmo, who finished past Berger to give Washington the lead. It was the defender’s first goal for the Spirit.
Bethi nearly added a second just two minutes later, striking the crossbar as Washington threatened to take control of the closing stages.

Gotham continued searching for an equalizer. In the 83rd minute, substitute Olivia Wingate created an opportunity for Denise O’Sullivan, whose right-footed effort went wide.
Washington protected its advantage through the final minutes, with goalkeeper Sandy MacIver finishing with two saves. The Spirit outshot Gotham 13–5, producing six attempts on target to the visitors’ two.

The final whistle confirmed a 1–0 victory and Washington’s third consecutive NWSL playoff berth. The result also moved the Spirit to 52 points, closing the gap to Gotham to three with two regular-season matches remaining.
Washington now turns its attention to an October 25 road meeting with the Kansas City Current. With postseason qualification secured, the remaining matches offer an opportunity to strengthen its playoff position and build on a significant victory at Audi Field.
